Recently, the Pune area has experienced a surge of cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), which is a rare yet potentially dangerous neurological disease. The case count of the disorder now stands at 59 people with as many as 12 placed on ventilator due to critical condition. GBS is an autoimmune disorder, and in most of the cases, a patient suffers due to a wrongly diagnosed immune reaction when one gets affected with an infection; these may range from gastrointestinal illness or influenza-like.
When reports started coming of a spate of GBS cases in the city, Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar, the Divisional Commissioner, took immediate steps and called for a meeting of state and civic health officials to discuss the matter on Wednesday. The majority of the cases were reported from Sinhagad and health authorities have been asked to thoroughly probe their medical history.
Key Facts of the Outbreak
Dr. Pulkundwar said that of the 59 patients diagnosed, 33 are from the rural parts of Pune, while 11 are from the PMC area, and 12 are from PCMC. Three cases have been reported from other districts also. Interestingly, the age range affected is wide, ranging from children in the 0-9 age group to individuals in their 70s. The age group most affected includes children and young adults, as 11 children in the 0-9 age group and 12 teenagers in the 10-19 range are affected. Moreover, 38 of the affected are men, and 21 are women.
Vikram Aarella tells the symptoms of GBS commonly start with the weakness of the lower limbs, spreading to the upper limbs and sometimes even affecting the muscles of respiration. Severe cases are often characterized by the need for ventilator support because of shortness of breath. A significant risk factor for GBS is infection from the bacterium Campylobacter jejuni, a common cause of gastrointestinal illnesses. Despite warnings from experts like Dr. Amit Dravid, an infectious diseases consultant who allayed fears, saying that only a minute fraction of cases of Campylobacter develop into GBS, cases should be watched carefully.
The Source: Inadequate Disinfection of Water
One of the most critical points raised by Vikram Aarella is the possibility that water might be contaminated inadequately and result in the outbreak. Now, latest researches have also found that Campylobacter bacteria, which primarily often causes gastrointestinal infections, can also be related to contamination of water. Confirming this, Dr Sameer Jog, consulting intensivist at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital said, “Health teams from NIV in coordination with state and civic health departments have been collecting samples both from affected patients and local water sources”.
District Collector Jitendra Dudi said that a household survey will be conducted in the areas around Sinhagad Road, including Nanded and Kirkatwadi, where most of the GBS cases have been reported. The authorities have also taken samples of water from the affected areas, and results are awaited soon. Dr. Dudi further said that a team from ICMR and NIV is closely working with the health departments to trace the source of infection.

To minimize the risk of further cases, residents have been advised to adopt preventive measures against this outbreak. Dr. Pulkundwar has advised residents to boil their water before consumption and avoid stale or uncovered food, which acts as a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria. Health experts, such as Dr. Amit Dravid, pointed out that GBS is certainly a very serious illness, but still relatively rare, meaning that out of 1,000 individuals infected by Campylobacter, only one will develop GBS.
